Pauline was the youngest of 13 children. She was born when Grandma Zena was 44 years old. Several of her older siblings were grown, married and gone from Brinkley, Arkansas when she grew up. Pauline was very skillful and played volleyball for her local team. She earned the nickname “Dirty Red” because of her long auburn hair and her ability to “spike” the ball! She attended college briefly in Little Rock, Ark after being awarded a scholarship by her all-black High School in Brinkley. She married and moved to Chicago in 1942. Pauline was naturally gifted musically. She played the piano at age 4 (by ear). Grandma and Grandpa were so impressed that they paid a lady at church to give her piano lessons. She loved music of all kinds: classical, jazz, gospel and R&B. She also taught piano and her students were presented in recitals yearly. Pauline played for Chicago churches for over 38 years. She had many adventures along life’s way. Her greatest was getting a passport, taking the necessary shots and flying for over 9 hours to Liberia, West Africa to witness the birth of her youngest grandchild Mahjula Bah-Kamara! Pauline had three children: Verna J. Gordon, Willie L. Norrington Jr. (deceased) and Paul E. Norrington. She led a full and busy life.
